Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra: Exeter Season Opening Concert - Moser plays Dvorak

Smetana’s joyous overture from The Bartered Bride is at the heart of what comic opera is all about: drama, excitement and bold character. Folk-like elements and bold, rich orchestrations bring it to life, making it one of the most exciting overtures ever composed. Written at the end of Dvořák’s three-year contract in New York, the Cello Concerto reflects some of his American experiences but is at the same time filled with the spirit of his beloved Bohemia where he longed to return. It contains some of his most memorable melodies and one of the loveliest of horn solos, and by placing the solo cello into a variety of constantly changing instrumental combinations the result is most delicate and translucent. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony’s appeal is not hard to understand. Described by Wagner as “the apotheosis of the dance”, with boundless energy and rhythmic impetus the music rages forward, almost demonically, with climax after climax, right to the brilliant final notes and one of the most thrilling endings in all music.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra: Portsmouth Season Opening Concert - Energy Unleashed

Mendelssohn’s musical postcard of a trip to the remote island of Staffa is more of a tone poem than an overture in the traditional sense. It conjures up a whole seascape including the grandeur of Fingal’s Cave, the swelling of the sea, the light on the water and the fury of the waves breaking on the monumental cliffs. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.21 is built on a fully symphonic scale, with an orchestral backing that matches the solo part for interest and variety. Forcefulness, elegance and wit are perfectly balanced. The dreamlike andante is based on the simplest of materials; its effect is magical, whilst the concluding rondo echoes with the laughter of comic opera.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra - A Fine Romance

Dvořák’s ebullient overture is one of three composed on the themes of nature, life and love. It depicts the high-spirited tumult of a festive carnival setting – barkers, vendors, boisterous crowds, although it is interrupted with a tinge of melancholy. Bruch’s Violin Concerto is one of the most popular and performed of any in the repertoire, beloved by both violinists and audiences alike. Capturing a heartfelt romantic allure with its lush and memorable themes, excellent solo writing, and impeccable pacing, it exploits virtually everything the violin can do in the hands of a master: from dramatic multi-stopped chords to soulful singing in the instrument’s husky low register all the way to its sparkling top. Modelled after Wagner but with Humperdinck’s own brand of instantly loveable songs and remarkable gift for melody, Hansel and Gretel almost glows with its innocence and peaceful spirit. Swan Lake is, without question, the greatest Romantic ballets of all time. A passionate love story with music to match, Tchaikovsky’s genius lies in the musical embodiment of the characters – the elegance of the swans, Odile’s allure, and Rothbart’s malice. From the sweeping romanticism of the “swan theme” to the celebratory waltzes and iconic national dances, the beautifully evocative score never fails to make a powerful impact.

Manchester Camerata - The Beautiful Game

From terrace chants such as ‘Blue Moon’ and ‘Glory Glory Man United’ belted at full volume, to iconic anthems echoing across stadiums, the voices of centuries of die-hard fans have formed the soundtracks for football clubs across the nation.

This concert, performed on pitch at the National Football Museum, celebrates the drama and passion of the nation’s most beloved sport.

Not only does the music of football set the atmosphere alight in stadiums everywhere, but it also proudly embodies the culture and identity of the cities and communities that shape our nation.

The earliest recorded football chant is believed to have been written by composer Sir Edward Elgar in 1898: “He Banged the Leather for Goal”, in tribute to Wolverhampton Wanderers striker, Billy Malpass.

One of the pieces we will feature is James MacMillan’s Eleven. It begins with the sound of a referee’s whistle before two eleven-note themes are thrown around between wind and strings, as if they are two opposing teams.

In this concert, you’ll enjoy familiar football anthems, a mix of local and international chants, and music inspired by the world’s favourite sport.

Manchester is a city united by football. This concert is a celebration of the music that sets the rhythm and heartbeat to our love for the beautiful game.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra - Celestial Symphony

Bax’s Tintagel is a piece deeply entwined with the South West, not just because of the ruined castle which inspired it, but also through its connection to English folklore and mythology and its windswept coasts. Sir Dan conducted the premiere in Bournemouth in 1921 The influence of Mozart is apparent throughout Beethoven’s C major Piano Concerto. The piano’s role ornaments the orchestral material, but the broad artistic expressiveness shows Beethoven’s embrace of the emerging Romantic mood of the day. Vaughan Williams’ Fifth Symphony is one of hope written at a time of raging war. It emerges from a dreamlike stillness. Gradually the orchestra is brought to life through playful dialogue reaching its emotional zenith in the gloriously stirring Romanza, before a series of exuberant variations reach a sudden halt. The music subsides back to its mysterious opening and finally rests in hushed transcendence.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchetsra - Clarinet Bliss

Mozart wrote his only concerto for clarinet in the space of about ten days, when he was at the height of his powers, and only two months before his tragically early death.  It is a glorious work: the first great concerto for the instrument, and some would say still the greatest, which displays the range and agility of the clarinet as well as its velvety and soulful qualities. Julian Bliss performs this concerto with Enyi Okpara conducting the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
